Description Residenza il Castello Piegaro

Located within the beautifully-restored 13th century Castle, and overlooking the castle courtyard and well (still used), the apartments provide classic Umbrian accommodation in a peaceful and attractive location. Guests have full use of the castle grounds, including the private swimming pool (7m × 15m), open from May to September, which is equipped with umbrellas, sun loungers and a shower. The apartments are provided with central heating and fire places for the colder times of the year.  

The Castle is positioned at the top of a hill overlooking the Nestore valley, some 5 km south-east of Tavernelle, to the south of Lake Trasimeno. Access is via a partly unmade 1 km road winding up the hill above Collebaldo and the picturesque Castiglion Fosco.

The area is excellent for walking or cycling. A number of circular walks start from the castle, taking you through the rolling, wooded Umbrian countryside, filled with wild flowers, birds and butterflies. A pair of hoopoes can often be seen in the castle grounds, and wild boar on the road in the evening dusk. Gaiche is centrally placed for art, history and architecture. The artist Perugino was born and died in Perugia, and both there and in many surrounding towns (including Città della Pieve and Panicale) are examples of his work. North Umbria was a central part of the ancient Etruscan empire; the Etruscan museum in Chiusi houses one of the best collections outside Rome. The amazing pink-stoned town of Assisi is about an hour away, while classic red-brown Siena is slightly further. Florence, Rome and Pisa are day trips, by car or train. Another turistic attraction is the Trasimeno Lake, which offers water sports (wind-surfing, pedalos, yachts etc.). There is a ferry service from point to point around the lake and to the three islands. Polvese, one of the islands, is a nature reserve.

The history 
The history of the castle is not documented before 1258, when the first document is found relating to the castle.  Most likely it was an agricultural settlement: the castle is not on a trade or pilgrim route.

The present buildings that comprise the castle were reconstructed in about 1994.The site is classified as a national monument and all reconstruction works are subject to planning guidelines and approvals, governing materials and aesthetics of the build.

The castle is located on a hill 437 metres above sea level.Commanding views over the Nestore valley and Castiglion Fosco.  Perugia is visible across the valley. 

There are two likely derivations of the name Giache; the first derivation is fabled to come from Clauco (latin glaucus),  From Greek mythology, according to Ovid, Glaucus began life as a fisherman living in the Beoetian city of Anthedon.  By accident he discovered a magical herb that could make the fish that he had caught; come back to life, and he decided to eat it. The herb made him immortal but had a side effect where he grew fins in place of limbs and a fish tail and was forced to live forever in the sea.  Oceanus and Tethys received him and he was quickly accepted amongst the deities of the sea.  From these deities he learnt the art of philosophy.  It was believed that he commonly came to the rescue of sailors in storms, having once been one himself. In Greek mythology Glauco helped the Argonaughts.

A second derivation is from Briganti which would suggest that Giache is derived from the name Gaytus, which came from the Arabic meaning master or leader this likely refers to the defence or governing of the castle.  This term was in use in the twelfth century in the Norman Courts of Sicily.
